the Lenham Pottery Models one-eighth scale Cob. Cobs come in many shapes and sizes, since they were produced by crossing the various breeds of native ponies with hackneys for driving (see Standing Pony), with small cart horses for draught work (see Vanner), and with hunters for weight-carrying riding hacks. This model is of a light horse/pony cross, and is of a mare in the resting position. It is suitable for the smaller four-wheel single-shaft turnouts, most two-wheel floats, gigs, hansom cabs, etc. It also fits the shafts of the John Thompson Bow Top (or Open Lot) gypsy caravan, which was designed to be light to pull. The Vanner would be more up to the job of pulling the heavier Ledge Waggon. Gypsies were traditionally supposed to favour 'coloured' horses, piebald or skewbald, perhaps because they were regarded as undesirable by the breeders and thus disposed of cheaply. The model can be coloured to order in all normal horse or pony colours, in gloss or satin finish. The photo is of a light bay, satin finish. It stands just over 7 inches to the withers, (14.2 hands). Allow 2.5 inches between the shafts.
