This page
gives information, details, dimensions and prices in £ and $ of
the Lenham Pottery Models one-eighth scale Shire Horse. I
have published a book, "Mould Making for Artisans" which includes
step-by-step illustrations of the making of this Shire
Horse. The history of the Shire horse is one of continuous improvement. Henry VIII tried to encourage breeders to produce horses for war over 15 hands, which meant that the horse a knight in armour was riding was not much more than a heavyweight pony. Breeders today achieve 18 hands, an increase of twelve inches in 500 years. The modern show animal is all hard muscle, carries much less fat on the belly and hair on the heels than the earliest photographs taken in the nineteenth century. The Lenham Pottery Models Shire Horse is designed to stand 17.2 inches to the withers (8.75 inches) and is suitable for brewers' show drays, heavy delivery vehicles or the largest farm waggons. It is most often seen as a bay (rich brown with black mane, tail and knees) with white socks and a broad white blaze on the nose, as photo. Plain chestnut is not liked by the breeders. I can make other colours, all black, grey or dapple, in gloss or satin finish (as photo). Allow 4.25 inches between the shafts.
