Using
Room Temperature Vulcanising Silicone Rubber Compounds.
 |
The
intoduction of RTV Silicone Rubbers in various grades revolutionised
my modelling and mouldmaking routines. This particular grade is soft
and flexible, and white, as can be seen. It can be coloured with silicone
colour pastes, or with polyester colours intended for firbre-glass
resin use. It is necessary to be very particular with the weighing,
because only 5% catalyst (a thin, runny liquid) is required. I have
been using Wacker RTV compounds, because they are available locally
from Marplas, Martineau Lane, Norwich. |

Alec
Tiranti Ltd sells RTV rubbers from General Electric of the USA which
would cover most moulding requirements, including thixotropic additive
for moulding onto vertical surfaces, and silicone fluid to make
the compound more fluid.
I have
used RTV-31 when I want to make a mould for casting harness parts,
or a very firm rubber for the small permanent models of the dolls
house components. This is red in colour, and heat-proof up to the
temperature of the molten pewter/lead alloys which I use for harness
fittings and the dolls house metal parts.

This
model collar is made in a plaster mould. It is suitable for the harness
of the Shire Horse. It is coloured black with silicone-based pigment.
