Beginning the Modelling: Page One of Three.

First layer of modelling material onto the armature.

The first layer of the modelling compound is on.

The large set-square is to check that the outline is vertical and it is held in place by the 7 lb weight. I am holding the small transparent set-square, which shows me that there is still 5 mm to be added to the hip-bones.

See the page on the Modelling Compound for details of the supplier.

Checking the dimensions with set-squares.

The set-square is here placed on the chest to check the amount of modelling still to be added. The skeleton of the horse, rib cage, shoulders and pelvis, has been achieved, and the main muscle groups defined.

It is important to work on all parts of the body in turn and not concentrate on one side or quarter.

Up to now the processes have been mechanical rather than artistic. From here on the modelling is done by eye - knowing what is right instinctively - although referring often to the photographs and books on horse anatomy.

The next page is more modelling on the turntable.
