Introduction
to the LENHAM POTTERY discontinued MODELS pages:
The purpose
of these pages is to put into the public domain identification details,
size and shape, of the models I have designed, hand-made, cast, coloured
and fired since 1969. You might need to verify the provenance of a piece
or to challenge false attributions. I have been both flattered and upset
to see some of my models offered for sale on internet auction sites, ascribed
to well-known commercial public limited companies. I have never licensed
any firm to copy my designs.
For various
reasons, these items are no longer made. The models illustrated are digital
images of my reference copies where available, or scanned photos. Otherwise
I have photographed my working "rubber" models.
All original sculptures, working models, moulds, images and these words
are copyright.
I
began with dogs - my own breed being Keeshonds - for which there were
no commercial models available. For further information, click on the
image to open the Introduction
to Dog Models page.
In
1974 came the first horse model - a Percheron at 1/8th scale (1.5 inches
to 1 foot). By 1983 there were thirteen horses on the list at 1/8th, 1/10th,
1/12th scales, and we were manufacturing our own design of harness kits.
Horses are illustrated and listed on the main lenham-pottery-models.co.uk
site.
Horses: Background information:
My husband, Barré Funnell, was interested in making
models of horse-drawn vehicles, and when he retired from the RAF, he began
a fruitful association with John Thompson of Surrey. John was a draughtsman
and produced meticulous scaled plans of carts, waggons, gigs, timber-bobs,
ploughs, private and commercial vehicles. For ten years, we sold his plans
at the Model Engineering Exhibition in London, and he drew attention to
Lenham Pottery models in his books and publications. We still get people
trying to find us at our previous address at 215 Wroxham Road, Norwich.
He died tragically early in 1989. The hobby of making and exhibiting model
horse-drawn vehicles has gone into a decline with the abandonment of traditional
craft apprenticeships and the demise of those men whose livelihood depended
on the horse. A few craftsmen are still working and exhibits may be seen
at the Model Engineering Exhibition (Sandown Park, January) or the Midlands
Model Engineering Exhibition (Warwickshire Exhibition Centre, Near Leamington
Spa, October. website - www.modelengineeringexhibition.co.uk)
